Federal Study Proposes Increased Gas Tax to Update Transportation Infrastructure

Federal gasoline taxes should be increased up to 40 cents per gallon over the next five years, says the National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission, following a two-year study, the results of which were reported to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and to a Senate panel.

California Sues the EPA, ARB Refutes EPA Rationale

When the U.S. Environmental Agency (EPA) denied the state of California the waiver required to enable the state to regulate tailpipe greenhouse gas emissions from passenger cars and light trucks, it was only a matter of time before the state reacted. Besides California, which originated the tougher standards, there are 16 other states that have either adopted or are in the process of adopting the California standard - Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.

European Proposed Legislation Uses Fines to Limit Vehicle CO2 Emissions

BRUSSELS -- The European Commission has proposed legislation that would begin implementing an integrated approach to reducing the average CO2 emissions of new passenger cars to 120 grams per kilometer by 2012, a reduction of 25 percent from the current average is around 160 g/km.

EPA Denies California Request to Control Emissions

WASHINGTON -The Bush Administration is moving forward with a national solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from American vehicles. The new energy legislation passed by Congress and signed by President Bush late last month provides a federal fuel economy standard that offers environmental benefits, energy security and economic certainty for the nation.

WASHINGTON WATCH: New Energy Act Will Change the Cars You Drive and Work On

WASHINGTON - President George W. Bush has signed into law new energy legislation, the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, that will reduce oil dependency. The signing comes just days after Congress approved legislation, with majority votes of 85-12 in the U.S. Senate and 314-100 in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Maine Business Development Committee Halts 'Right to Repair' Bill

December 12, 2007

WASHINGTON, D.C. - After studying the issue for much of this past legislative session, the Maine Joint Standing Committee on Business, Research, and Economic Development met last week to make a formal recommendation on whether the "so-called" Right to Repair bill should be forwarded to the legislature. Following the work session, the committee unanimously decided that at this time legislation was unnecessary and asked stakeholders to update the committee in April 2008 on various training initiatives proposed by the Maine Automobile Dealers Association (MADA) and the Automotive Service Association (ASA).
