An old adage holds that businesses, like people, are haunted by their pasts. If that's true, the personnel at S&S Service
Center in Kansas City, MO, might want to listen for the sound of pizza dough being tossed around. After all, their shop is
housed in a refurbished former Shakey's Pizza Parlor.
5 There is no mistaking this professional automotive service building for its former life as a Shakey restaurant.
Normally, such entertaining tidbits highlight the history of most businesses, but not S&S. For them, finding a home in a pizza
parlor is just one minor chapter in a business story that began five decades ago. During the past 25 years, that story has
morphed into an ongoing business journey staked on taking those precious additional steps that turn the ordinary shop into
something extraordinary.

The S&S story begins in the 1950s, when the father of current owner Jerry Holcom ran the business (then under a different
name). In 1972, he retired and sold the business to Bill Schwindt and George Solomon (hence the S&S name), who ran it for
the next decade. In 1982, fresh from tech school, Holcom purchased the business back. He then set himself on course to become
a better businessperson by joining a Bottom-Line Impact Group.
