Michael Godson (second from left, with Motor Age Training Brand Manager James Hwang) was awarded the ASE L1 Technician of the Year Award, given out by ASE and Motor Age Training.

Michael Godson, an automotive instructor at Clark College, in Washougal, Wash., was awarded the 2009 ASE L1 Technician of the Year Award. The designation was given out by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and Motor Age Training at the recent ASE Board Meeting in New Orleans.

Godson has worked in the automotive technician industry since 1978 and has been an instructor at Clark College since 1995. Out of nearly 15,000 people that registered this year to take the L1 exam, Godson scored the highest.

A past winner of such awards as the Mitchell 1 Educator of the Year, Godson says he views being a technician as a was to contribute to society.

"I've always said the industry chose me, I didn't choose the industry," Godson says. "Even as a small child I was driven to work with my hands taking things apart and putting them back together."

Godson recalls building a minibike out of an old lawn mower engine when he was 9 years old, and, to the amusement of parts store employees and peers, he was able to get the small vehicle running.

Godson is married and has four children.
