![]() Before Robert Berger was in high school, he knew he wanted to own his own shop. After working in a full-service gas station, he eventually was asked to take over a neglected four-bay gas station in 1961. He stuck to the “basics,” and the station grew into Hubbard Woods Motors. The facility now employs a number of ASE certified technicians and service advisors servicing one vehicle make, Volvo. It offers complimentary notepads, coffee and bottled water to customers, and send thank-you cards to all new customers and those with invoices over $1,000. The shop features eight bays and 11 employees, including three techs with more than 20 years of experience. Berger six years ago joined a charter group of independent Volvo shop owners, keeping him from selling his business at the time. Now its Volvo Twenty group meets to analyze aspects of the members’ businesses to make them better.
