As part of Honeywell Consumer Products Group’s efforts to provide an array of training to aftermarket professionals at both the counter and in the bays, Prestone has just finished developing its cooling system course, entitled, “Passenger Car Coolants and Cooling Systems.”

The course provides a basic overview of cooling system operations and components, but will also enhance the attendees’ knowledge of common cooling system failures, testing standards and more. Main topics covered in the 2.5 hour program include:

• A breakdown of cooling system problems that can occur in the blocks, cylinder heads, radiators, pumps, thermostats and hose necks like cavitation, corrosion, pitting and solder bloom.
• An overview of the different types of OE antifreeze/coolant on the market today, including Organic Acid Technology, Hybrid Organic Acid Technology and Inorganic Acid Technology.
• The importance of water quality and problems that can occur if the right type and ratio of water and antifreeze/coolant isn’t utilized.
• The current industry practice for antifreeze/coolant testing.
• The proper antifreeze/coolant testing methods, covering hydrometer, test strips and refractometers.
• The effect electrolysis has on cooling systems along with how to test for it.
• Step by step instructions on testing AC and DC voltage in a cooling system.
• An understanding on the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor’s operation and diagnosis.
